Mauve No More

Before After

It’s always fun to look back on a completed project and remember what the kitchen first looked like. In this case there were a lot of small problems with this kitchen that hadn’t been redecorated in decades. Issues such as the mauve countertops, old-fashioned radius curved plastic dome ceiling, outmoded fluorescent lights, and outdated vinyl flooring were on the top of the list.

“The kitchen has a nice layout and everything works. I am very happy with it, except with the mauve countertops,” said Skip, the homeowner. “I can’t stand the pink anymore.”

Mauve was big in the 1980s and 1990s, when the distinctive dusty rose color showed up on Formica countertops, carpeting, sectional sofas, and accent walls. These design trends were once hip and modern, but now they’re signs that your house needs an update.

Before After

It’s amazing how much larger this renovated kitchen feels with the soffit and dome lights gone. Another design feature that makes this kitchen appear larger is the extension of the wall cabinets to the ceiling. Incorporating frieze trim moulding detail at the top draws the eyes upward.

Comparing the “before” and “after,” it’s hard to believe this is the same room. The white painted Shaker style cabinets by Aspect Cabinetry, Jateau Briand granite countertops, wood-look plank flooring, matte black hardware and faucet, and strategically placed LED can lights have fully transformed the room. This fabulous kitchen is mauve, no more!

I’d like to recognize everyone who contributed to this kitchen remodel and helped bring our client’s dream to life: Just Counter’s professional team: Bill Daniels, Sam Zwack, and Kody Mouradian. Stone Art Creations did a terrific job installing the countertops.
