A few years after buying a very open and spacious, beautifully decorated home with 180° gorgeous lake views in Port Charlotte, Fred and JoAnn, knew they wanted to give the kitchen a major update. However, the homeowners loved the existing footprint, so they decided to simply revive the look.
Our clients, Fred and JoAnn, knew that the kitchen is more than the place where food is made – it’s where guests gather, it’s the center of a family’s day-to-day living, and it’s a space that ties the home together. Therefore, when this New Jersey couple was ready to remodel their kitchen they decided to hire the team at Just Counters & Other Stuff.
At first JoAnn wanted cabinets stained in a dark brown hue. With a little guidance, I encouraged her to reconsider her color choice. “Believe it or not, white cabinets come in a wide variety of white shades,” I told the couple. “Since cabinets are such an important part of a kitchen, it’s important to have some in a style and color you love. Consider using antique white for a color that will work well with your existing floor tile. Dark brown cabinets in your windowless kitchen may end up being too dark.”
Choosing the right color for their kitchen cabinets was an overwhelming process for the couple because there are so many different shades to choose from. Ultimately, the couple borrowed several door styles and colors. They wanted to “sleep on it.”
After a long weekend, JoAnn returned with a happy and relieved look on her face! She was in love with the idea of using a creamy white with glazing to give her cabinets an antique look. She reported that the couple picked Dover white with mocha glaze. We wanted to add visual interest to the “new kitchen” so we varied the heights and depths of the wall cabinets. Cabinet crown mouldings were the finishing touch.
JoAnn’s first choice of countertop material didn’t work out. “Plan A” didn’t go as expected because it blew the budget. “Plan B” ended up being more affordable and far more beautiful than what the homeowner expected! The final selection was Cambria’s Bellingham, with marble-like waves of dark gray and black swirls around a backdrop of creams and light gray.
The homeowner’s existing 4-inch backsplash did not protect the walls from stains, spills, or other kitchen mishaps. JoAnn decided to go with a bold backsplash. She opted to use the same countertop material for a full-height backsplash. And unlike the mixed-medium mosaic tile backsplashes that are so trendy right now, natural stone will never become dated or go out of style. In the end this backsplash is eye-catching with Cambria’s Bellingham movement and patterns.
But wait! There’s one more thing! Fred and JoAnn created their very own custom-built wood cornices in the cozy kitchen nook, a small secluded spot just off the kitchen. This gives their windows and sliding glass doors a touch of old-world elegance! They used the same paint and glaze colors as their cabinets. I love, LOVE this kitchen! What do you think?
