Unbelievable Mobile Home Kitchen Transformation

Before After

There’s something extremely satisfying about a great before-and-after—and that’s especially true for kitchens. While every room has the potential for total transformation, the kitchen usually has a lot more going on, from cabinets to countertops to backsplashes to cabinet hardware. Changing even just one element can make a huge impact.

Aside from all that, the kitchen is the heart of the home. You’re sure to spend time in it, at least a couple times of day for meals.

Being in this North Port, Florida kitchen was like slipping on brown-tinted glasses and time-traveling back to 1979. Our clients, Claude and Nancy, wanted to remodel their mobile home kitchen on a budget. But doing so, it required a great deal of planning. They pretty much knew where they wanted to splurge and where they could save a few bucks.

There are a couple of things that “stand out” about mobile home kitchens. For example, if I showed you two kitchen photographs, one being a mobile home and the other in a typical house or condo, you’d probably know which one was a mobile home because of the cabinets. The other conspicuous tip-off would be the VOG (vinyl over gypsum) wall panels. In most cases, older mobile home cabinetry is typically made with MDF (medium-density fiberboard).

The first order of business for the couple: updating the 1979 cabinetry. Replacing all of the cabinets wasn’t an option in our customers’ budget. So, instead of replacing their entire kitchen cabinets, our clients opted to change just the base cabinets. They selected dark gray (Dorian Gray) Shaker-style cabinets made by Aspect Cabinetry. Claude and Nancy chose to paint the old, upper cabinet doors with light gray paint. This made a vast improvement.

Rather than going for expensive countertop materials, they chose acrylic solid surface made by LG Hausys. This material is extremely hardwearing, durable, scratch resistant, and low maintenance. They chose the color “Glitz” with a white background and small gray particulates.

Similar to a diamond necklace on a little black dress, decorative kitchen hardware are the pieces of jewelry in your kitchen that add personality and style. Claude and Nancy chose Richelieu satin nickel hardware: knobs on the cabinet doors and pulls on the drawer fronts. I love the simple, timeless look of these.

Impressive redesigns don’t have to be costly, as this amazing makeover proves. While the newly remodeled kitchen doesn’t feature high-end appliances or luxurious materials, it is a dramatic improvement from the once drab, dull, dreary, and dated kitchen that came with the mobile home. I can hardly believe it’s the same kitchen!
