Small Kitchen on a Budget

Before After

When Jerry and Nancy wanted to give their kitchen a facelift without spending a fortune, they contacted me at Just Counters & other stuff, inc.  The elderly couple lives in an 838 sq. ft. condo located in a park-like setting in Port Charlotte, Florida.

After I arrived in our clients’ lovely home, I saw that they would not have to spend an exorbitant amount of money in order to add a few new finishes in the small, but dated kitchen. I told them that laminate countertops have come a long way. If some of you readers are wrinkling your nose and making a cringe sigh, after I mentioned this countertop choice, I want you to know laminate has changed a lot over the years. Like I explained to our customers, today’s laminates definitely aren’t like what my mother or grandma had. Today’s laminate countertops now mimic the look and feel of natural stone, and because of this, laminate is making a dramatic comeback. I told Jerry and Nancy there’s now tons of colors, patterns, and edge options to choose from, so they can get the look they want, but still at a fraction of the price of other materials. Plus, it’s very durable and maintenance free, unlike stone countertops. The new laminate countertops are a wipe-clean surface.

Jerry and Nancy believe in supporting small businesses instead of opting for big box stores. Just Counters & other stuff, inc. is a trusted, local company that has been in business for over 20 years. Just Counters supports local communities in SW Florida, and understands the culture and needs of the people who live here. They make sure remodeling projects are completed with expertise, precision, and commitment.

For the heart of their home, Jerry and Nancy decided to make a few minor changes. The first was to change their countertops. They wanted the look of natural stone so they chose ‘Italian White Di Pesco’ by Wilsonart. This laminate countertop features cream, gray splotches, and veining throughout.

This is where I should note something important. As a small business owner, Mark and Kathy Kemeny, wear all kinds of hats. They really care about customers and are known to go above and beyond for them. This is a perfect example. These days new construction and remodeling is growing rapidly, and labor shortage continues to spread across the country. Being temporarily short-staffed, Mark and Kathy focus on things that absolutely must need to be done. If you had visions of small business owners who sit in a plush office all day, looking out of a big window, and having personal assistants to bring them coffee, you might want to sit down for this one. I will tell you that this couldn’t be further from the truth at Just Counters & other stuff. I’ve watched Mark and Kathy roll up their sleeves to get some hard and dirty work done in order to grow their company. The two of them went the extra mile to make sure Jerry’s and Nancy’s job (and many others) got done. They built this beautiful countertop! Did they really do the work themselves? You betcha! And they did an awesome job! Mark and Kathy are always willing to pitch in wherever they’re needed. They’ve demonstrated that there’s no task that’s beneath them. Over the years they’ve developed a real understanding of all aspects of their company and how it runs from the very bottom, all the way to the top.

A kitchen backsplash is another area where Jerry and Nancy decided they could step up the style in their kitchen without investing a fortune. They selected subway tiles which mesmerizes marble.

The homeowners added hardware knobs and pulls to their existing cabinets. Jerry also modernized the look by painting the wood trim on the melamine cabinets. He disappointedly told me that he used gray paint, but after it dried, it didn’t turn out the way it should have. He plans to repaint.

Last but least, the homeowners plan to replace the vinyl flooring at some point.

Are you doing anything to update your kitchen in 2022? Tell me what you have planned.
