It all started with a leak. At first neither one of the homeowners saw any signs of the slow water leak hidden inside a wall. The leak did not set off any alarms. But eventually there were warning signs. And one day the homeowners noticed stains and odd discolorations in the floor tile. Upon a closer evaluation, they discovered the sheetrock and a base cabinet had slowly become damaged, too. Ugh! What a hot mess!
About that time, Just Counters & other stuff had just completed a kitchen project in the homeowner’s business partner’s beautiful home. This was how I met Dick and Maureen.
Renovating a kitchen to better meet the needs of the homeowners is a rewarding process in itself, but making it into something amazing for the homeowners is the icing on the cake. For our recent Port Charlotte, Florida clients the “something amazing” was removing the dated soffit. Removing the soffit was at the top of their wish list, which they expressed during their initial consultation. Another must-have was to relocate the refrigerator and pantry.
One of the first things you’ll notice upon entering the new kitchen is how much brighter and larger the room feels compared to the original kitchen. Soffits hung from the ceiling made this kitchen feel dated and extremely closed-in. The previous soffits were used for purely aesthetic purposes. Luckily in this case the soffits did not have any serious vents, pipes, or wiring, so removing them wasn’t a problem. Saying goodbye to the soffits makes the room feel more open and spacious. While wallpaper is staging a major comeback, wide borders that were glued to the top of soffits look like yesterday. There are times like these—with soffits and wallpaper borders—when a blast from the past would be better off staying there.
Our team wanted to be sure to bring our clients’ dreams to life while also making improvements to the overall aesthetic and functionality of the kitchen. We installed Aspect white Shaker style cabinets. Glass front display doors were installed on two wall cabinets, with LED backlighting to draw the eyes upward. LED can lights were also strategically placed in the ceiling to brighten the room and create exceptional task lighting at the meal prep areas.
Maureen wanted an apron-front sink (sometimes called a farmhouse sink). The single basin sink was such a game changer. Maureen had been longing for one for a long time. Dick wanted the bar-height wall lowered to countertop height. What a bright and beautiful place to sit in the mornings with a fresh cup of coffee. They both wanted to extend the long countertop on the back wall with an undercounter refrigerator. The long counter will be perfect for a buffet spread if our clients are hosting guests.
Beautiful Cambria Crowndale countertop paired perfectly with the mosaic backsplash. It’s such a gorgeous feature. Under cabinet lighting spotlights the counter area. It also showcases the stunning quartz countertop and backsplash that also match the kitchen.
It was truly unfortunate that the homeowners had the water leak. But perhaps one could look at this as a blessing in disguise because the completed kitchen is absolutely stunning and it suits the clients well. The before and after photos are pretty jaw-dropping. We are so grateful to have been able to take on this project and bring this dream kitchen to life.
Kudos to all of our team members that participated in this project: Bill Rice, the showroom manager, and Jeff Reed, the installation manager. They are awesome managers. They both worked hard to ensure this renovation stayed on schedule. Bill’s and Jeff’s support and guidance made magic happen in this renovation. I’m always amazed with the knowledge and skills that Aaron Shaffer and Paul Damon have. And then there’s Tommy McCaffrey who is a dazzlingly skilled carpenter. There are times when members of our team wear many hats and have to think “outside of the box.” Speaking of a box… I want to climb up and stand on top of one while I shout to the world about what our wonderful team does and how great they are!
